Listed below are several opportunities for your consideration. We ask you to
prayerfully reflect over these opportunities and ask yourself: "Will I make some
return to God this coming year by serving others in His name?" A response sheet is
located at the end of this booklet. Please join us in being good stewards of Gods
Church and world.

The Pastoral Council serves as an advisory council to the pastor, providing
recommendations for courses of action to be taken by the parish. It is responsible
for coordinating the activities of the parish. Council members are appointed by the
pastor for a three year term.
|
|
The Stewardship Committee is a vital leadership group devoted to discovering
and communicating insights into Christian discipleship and their application
to stewardship as a way of life. Members plan the education of the parish in
stewardship and the annual renewal of time, talent and treasure. Training is provided.

Women of the parish meet each Friday morning after Mass to maintain the altars and
sacristy of the church. This group also assists in the preparations for Advent,
Christmas, Lent and Easter liturgies. During the Christmas and Easter seasons, extra
help is needed for watering the many live plants which enhance the beauty of the
church at these times.

Boys and girls, from 5th grade through high school, are given the opportunity to
serve at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and assist at weddings celebrated in the
parish. Servers who attend St. Martins School also assist at weekday funerals.
Servers are assigned approximately twice a month and allowances are made for their
family schedules and other weekend commitments. Training is provided.

Eucharistic ministers assist in the distribution of the Eucharist at Mass and
(as members of the Pastoral Care Team) bring the Eucharist to the sick and
homebound. Interested parishioners must send a letter of request to the pastor.
Diocesan requirements: one day of training for ministers of the Eucharist at
Mass; an additional day of training for ministers to the sick.

Boys and girls, from 8th grade through high school, have the opportunity to proclaim
the Readings from Scripture at the Sunday 9:00 AM Family Liturgy and other special
liturgies. Two Junior Lectors are assigned to each Family Liturgy. Each lector
serves once a month. Training is provided.

The Liturgy Committee consists of parishioners who plan, coordinate and implement
liturgical celebrations to enhance spirituality for the parish community.
Responsibilities include: weekly Prayer of the Faithful, special prayer services,
and liturgical themes and services for seasons of the Church year. Meetings are held once a month.

The Ushers/Greeters are parishioners who greet the people as they come together
at Mass on weekends and on Holy Days. They are responsible for the Offertory
collection and providing direction at Communion. Time commitment: 1 1/4 hours
per week.

The Adult Choir sings at the 10:30 AM Mass on Sundays. Rehearsals are held
from 7:45 PM to 9:15 PM on Tuesday evenings in the church. No auditions
are required.

The Childrens Choir sings at the 9:00 AM Sunday Family Liturgies. Rehearsals are held
from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Sundays in the Genesis Chapel. Children in grades 3-8 are welcome.

The Concert Choir performs twice a year and when invited to special performances. It
consists of all St. Martins music groups and is interdenominational. An audition is required.
|

The choir for the Rock Mass performs more contemporary music at the 5:00 PM Mass on the
second Sunday of each month. Individuals of high school and college age are welcome
as singers and band memberspiano, saxophone, electric guitar, electric bass, drums, synthesizer.
|

The Singers and Ensemble perform at the 5:00 PM Sunday evening Mass. Rehearsals are held
from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM on Wednesdays in the Church Chapel. Individuals of high school
and college age are welcome as singers and ensemble membersflute, violin, viola, bass,
clarinet, guitar, piano.

The St. Martins Symphony performs for special concerts and consists of predominantly
professional musicians from Long Island and the metropolitan area. Auditions are required.

Adult Faith Formation Team
|
|
This team is a group of parishioners who provide opportunities for formation in
spirituality and theology. They will arrange workshops and courses to be offered in
St. Martins parish as well as inform parishioners of events and activities in nearby
parishes. The group meets on an evening once a month.
|
|
Baptism Preparation Program
|
|
Host couples welcome into their homes families preparing for their childs Baptism.
With a priest or deacon, they explain the ceremony and the significance of the sacrament.
They also assist at the Baptism liturgy on Sunday afternoon. Time required: four sessions
per year, each session involving one two-hour preparation meeting in the home and one
one-hour Sunday ceremony.

Pre-Cana host couples, married for at least three years, share their life journey with
engaged couples, hoping to give them insights which will strengthen their commitment
to each other. During a Pre-Cana session, two host couples meet in their homes with a
small group of engaged couples once a week for five weeks. Three sessions (fall,
winter and spring) are offered each year. Training is provided.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
|
|
The RCIA process involves parishioners who journey with individuals who are seeking initiation
into our Catholic faith. Weekly meetings are held supporting, informing and praying with those
seeking the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) celebrated at the
Easter Vigil.

Small Faith Sharing Communities
|
|
Through prayer, reflection on Scripture and sharing the journey of faith, members of this group
come to a greater awareness of Gods love in their lives. Meetings are available on all
evenings and two mornings a week.
|
|
St. Martin of Tours Retreat Team
|
|
Members of this group plan and organize retreat experiences for men and women of our parish.
They research retreat centers and arrange for participation in retreats as parish groups.
Experiences include one-dayas well as overnight and weekend retreats.

Catechists for Religious Education
|
|
Catechists are parishioners who teach the Catholic faith to children. Grades 2-6 meet either one
afternoon a week (4:00 PM to 5:15 PM) or every Saturday (9:45 AM to 11:00 AM). Grade 7 meets
one evening a week (6:45 PM to 8:00 PM) and Grade 8 meets one evening a week (7:00 PM to 8:00 PM).
Training is provided.

The Childrens Liturgy Committee is a parish team that plans themes, generates handouts
and decorations, shares Scripture with children ages 5-9, and provides supervision for
children at the Sunday 9:00 AM Family Liturgy.

Girl Scout Religious Awards Program
|
|
This program fosters a deeper knowledge of our faith by encouraging Girl Scouts to
participate in service projects, trips to shrines, and various activities on the
family and parish level. The program takes 6 months to 1 1/2 years depending on the
age of the scout and the particular award for which she is working.

Comprehensive Emergency Program for the Unemployed (CEPU)
|
|
CEPU provides a full employment service which includes career testing, career guidance,
resume development and job search techniques including video interview practice for
professional, managerial, and technical positions. The volunteer staff maintains job
listings, processes applications, interviews job seekers and arranges appointments with
employers. Training is available; time is flexible. The CEPU office is open Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Tuesday (for counseling only),
from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Volunteers may serve as core workers or as receptionists. Core workers interview those
in emergency or on?going problem situations which require direct service, support and/or
advocacy. Outreach maintains a food pantry and a network with other service agencies. In
an outreach to immigrants, help in filing applications, citizenship education and English
as a second language is available. Volunteers may visit the homebound or provide service
in driving the elderly to local doctors or shopping. These volunteers are available on
an on-call basis. The Parish Outreach office is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM
until 12:30 PM and from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM.. The time commitment for office workers is

St. Martins Cloak Room Thrift Shop
|
|
Parish volunteers raise money for Parish Outreach by sorting, preparing for sale and assisting
in selling donated clothing and small household goods. Each volunteer works one three-hour
shift a week (or the equivalent). The thrift shop is open Monday through Saturday from
10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

|
St. Vincent de Paul Society
|
|
The members of this organization make home visits in pairs to those requesting help
in obtaining furniture, food, transportation and financial assistance. Time is
requested on an on-call basis. Training is provided.

Parish volunteers assist the bereaved through prayer and a compassionate discussion of
the grief process suggesting steps to ease the pain of loss. Training is available.

Parishioners provide support to bereaved families by assisting them in funeral preparations,
by offering the condolences of the parish family through a cake and sympathy card and by
serving at the funeral Mass or service as greeters, lectors, Eucharistic ministers and
companions. Volunteers must be available for morning funeral Masses; bakers must be
available to deliver. Training is provided.

Pastoral Care of the Sick

|
Volunteers provide compassionate, personal and immediate attention to the human needs
of the hospitalized and homebound through personal visits. They provide a listening ear,
words of comfort and encouragement, and the Eucharist. The Pastoral Care Team meets four
times a year for spirituality. Eucharistic ministers preferred but not required. Training
is provided; a Diocesan program, Compassionate Care I, is required for the hospital team.

This enthusiastic group of parents meets periodically. They work tirelessly for the
benefit of all in the parish school community. Their activities include parent education,
social gatherings and fund raising. A membership drive is held in September.

The School Board is a consultative body to the pastor and principal. They meet monthly to
share ideas and set goals in order to assist all in the parish elementary school community.
Elections are held each year in May.
|
|
The School Volunteers are adults willing to assist our school staff and work with our
children in various programs. This ministry is for those who are excited about children
and learning.

The Bishops Annual Appeal raises money for the operations of the Diocese and Catholic
Charities. It is also the principal fund raiser for the parish. Volunteers make phone
calls and assist the chairperson in this seasonal endeavor (January through March).

Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes
|
|
The Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes form an international service organization
which provides assistance to members, their families, the community and the Catholic
Church with charitable donations to the Church, the Catholic schools and the needy.
|
|
Ladies Guild / Rosary-Altar Society
|
|
With the Blessed Mother as its model, this society helps to promote the spiritual,
philanthropic, social and civil welfare of the parish. Meetings are held once a month
on Wednesday evenings. After the recitation of the rosary, a spiritual or social
program is offered. All women are encouraged to join. Dues are collected.
|
|
The Legion of Mary brings the love and joy of Jesus through Mary to all by visiting and praying
the rosary with the Pilgrim Virgin and by daily rosary prayers in the church, at home and in
nursing homes. Meetings are held on Tuesdays at 9:30 AM for one hour and each of the above
visits lasts one hour.
|
|
The Ministry of Praise is an ongoing spiritual journey and commitment that originated for
the homebound in our parish. It has flourished to include all who desire to be a part of
intercessory prayer for St. Martin of Tours. Each month members of the Ministry receive a
letter containing prayers and petitions to which they dedicate their prayers for the month.
The Ministry presently has 70 members.

Parish Hospitality Committee
|
|
The Hospitality Committee consists of a group of people who set up refreshments for
various occasions held in the parish. The refreshments are provided by the parish;
the committee members offer their services when needed.
|
|
Respect for Life Committee
|
|
This committee addresses the issue of abortion and its effect on mother, child and society.
It also seeks to educate on the need to respect the dignity of the handicapped and elderly.
The Needy Infant Program provides for the needs of economically deprived infants. Meetings
are held monthly and last 1-2 hours. Other time varies according to the activity.

|
St. Martins Senior Adult Club
|
|
This group provides information programs and social gatherings to seniors 55 years of age and
older, many of whom are parish volunteers. Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of
each month, except in July and August.
|
|
The Welcoming Committee is a group of parishioners who contact the newly registered in our
parish. After the pastors letter of welcome and information packet are received, a follow-up
letter is sent and a call made to answer questions, give additional information, and further
welcome the new member to the parish community.
